Urban League of Broward County’s Young Professionals Network partners with Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale to offer free youth program

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The Urban League of Broward County’s Young Professionals Network (YPN) recently partnered with Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale to host a free Youth Summit at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale for more than 200 Broward County youth. The Youth Summit empowered students to take charge of their future, while addressing topics such as interviewing skills, public speaking, selecting a career path and more.

“We are proud to host this Youth Summit, which is a great opportunity to engage students in an educational experience that will provide them with lifelong skills,” said Andrea Owes, president, Urban League of Broward County’s YPN. “By partnering with Breakthrough Fort Lauderdale, we were able to increase the exposure of the program, and offer more students the opportunity to participate.”

The Youth Summit kicked off with a special welcome, which led into a host of breakout sessions covering the areas of college preparation, knowing your self worth, tips on ways to exude confidence and more.

In addition, more than 200 students participated in an interactive panel discussion based on the award-winning novelist Coral Daniels’ Ghettonation, which challenged youth to address the impact that urban culture has on America. Panelists included Dr. Chetachi Egwu, assistant professor of Communication at Nova Southeastern University, Anthony Pepe, author of ...That Defines the Light and Funky Gorilla Fist and Karla Dejean, director of Diversity at Pine Crest School.

The Urban League of Broward County YPN’s mission is to cultivate a new generation of young professionals to take an active role in serving and empowering Broward County’s urban communities. The organization is among many across the nation affiliated with the National Urban League, and has been serving the Broward County community since February 2007."
