Greetings All,
iChange: Change The World, Change Your World, the theme of the 2009 Youth Summit and Parent Empowerment Conference, featuring Keynote Speaker, Mr.Hardge, speaks to the transformative power individuals can have on themselves, their families, their communities, and subsequently, the world. Through this joint conference for our youth and their parents/guardians, we hope to make synergistic change that will impact Broward County and beyond. I want to thank you again for your willingness to contribute to the second year of this workshop series. Last year, we were able to impact the lives of over 200 youth. This year, we are hoping to increase the youth participants to 250 while bringing in 100 parents and care givers. We currently have an impressive list of presenters who will speak to a variety of topics, including: college /career readiness, healthy peer and parental relationships, nutrition, safety, conflict resolution, financial management, etc. Since we're dividing the conference into strategic groups this year (middle school (12-14), high school (15-18), and adults), we are looking for a few more individuals to present. Please share the call for proposal below and the attached form with colleagues and associates you think may be able to contribute. The deadline for submission is January 23. If you have not already sent me your proposal form with bio, workshop description and material needs, please send before January 23. Always yours, Abena

Lobbyists' role in campaign questioned
Posted on Mon, Jul. 21, 2008reprint print email

A question about the influence of lobbyists at Broward County Hall led to a heated exchange between County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion Jr. and his campaign opponents at a candidate forum Thursday night at the African American Research Library in Fort Lauderdale.

At the forum sponsored by Broward Votes, three of Eggelletion's opponents -- Lauderdale Lakes City Commissioner John Billingsley, pastor Allen B. Jackson and Lauderhill City Commissioner Dale Holness -- blasted Eggelletion for accepting contributions from county lobbyists.

'It's very easy to say, `Joe Eggelletion takes money from lobbyists,' when all of you call those same lobbyists to beg them for money, and they say 'no' because they don't think you all are qualified,'' Eggelletion shot back. ``And I know this because they call me after you all call them.''

''I have not asked any lobbyist for one dime,'' Billingsley responded, adding that he had never asked for money from lobbyists like George Platt and Judy Stern, who is also Eggelletion's campaign consultant.

''Yes, you did!'' Stern called out from the back of the room.
